Google Business Profile for Local Businesses: The Complete 2026 Setup

A complete GBP with real photos and 20+ reviews drives more calls than most local business websites. Here is the exact setup process.

For most local service businesses, a complete Google Business Profile with real photos and 20+ genuine reviews will drive more calls than a $5,000 website with zero GBP presence. If you are building local business websites as a service, include GBP setup in every engagement. Make it non-optional.

Step 1: Claim or create the listing Go to business.google.com. Search for the business. If a listing exists, claim it. If not, create it from scratch.

Step 2: Choose the right business type Service area business (no storefront) versus storefront business. This matters for how Google shows the listing. A tree service that works across 12 towns but has no retail location is a service area business — hide the physical address and add the service area instead.

Step 3: Category selection This is your most important SEO decision on GBP. Be specific. "Tree service" not "Home services." "Family dentist" not "Healthcare." Google uses your primary category to determine which searches you are eligible to appear for.

Step 4: Service area Add every city the business serves. By name. Do not just say "Southern Indiana" — list Dillsboro, Versailles, Batesville, Milan, Sunman, Osgood, Lawrenceburg, Aurora. Every town you add is a search query you can appear for.

Step 5: Upload photos Minimum 10 photos. Real job sites, real equipment, real work in progress and completion. Google rewards active GBPs with more photo uploads. Stock photos are not real photos. The owner's iPhone photos from a job site are better than any stock image.

Step 6: Verify USPS postcard (standard, 5-7 days) or video verification (faster, sometimes available). Follow the instructions exactly.

Step 7: Reviews This is the ongoing work. 20+ real reviews is the threshold where the listing starts winning the local pack consistently. The fastest path: text the review link to happy customers immediately after every job, while the experience is fresh and they have their phone in hand.

After setup Add the GBP manager access to the client's personal Google account (owner level, not just manager). Set up Google Search Console for the website and link it to the GBP. Check for Q&A questions on the listing and answer them.

A complete GBP that gets consistent photo uploads and review responses tells Google this is an active, engaged business. That signal compounds over time.
